Course Description: The Foundations of Engineering and Technology is the introductory course for the Engineering and Technology Education pathways. This STEM driven course provides the students with an overview of engineering and technology including the different methods used in the engineering design process developing fundamental technology and engineering literacy. Students will demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have learned through various project based activities while using an engineering design process to successfully master the “E” in STEM.

GRADING SYSTEM: The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches, methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal. See Board Policy IHA.

Notes:

*English Learners (ELs) must not receive numerical or letter grades for the core content areas in elementary and middle school during their first year of language development. A grade of CS or CU must be assigned. This rule may be extended beyond the first year with approval from the EL Studies Program. English Learners must receive a grade for ESOL courses.

~Elementary schools will utilize P (pass) and F (fail) in Health/Physical Education, Music, World Languages, Visual Arts and Performing Arts.

 


DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS

STUDENT PROGRESS

Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each semester. The progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate deficiencies as they are discovered. Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. See Board Policy IH.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing false information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or password. See the Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook.

HOMEWORK

Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience. Homework is at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience. It should be considered the possession of the student and should be collected, evaluated and returned to the students. See Board Policy IHB.

MAKE-UP WORK

DUE TO ABSENCES

When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently beyond the control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days absent. Make-up work must be completed within the designated time allotted. See Board Policy IHEA.

SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

I do not give grades, ALL grades are earned. We will be utilizing the tool listed under the ‘Homework Policy’ often in the classroom. Each student in my class will have access to this tool and it is expected to be checked often and daily. This application is accessible from mobile devices as well.

Homework Policy:

All assignments (including homework) are posted on my website http://www.arabiamtnhs.dekalb.k12.ga.us/ShenicaMathieu.aspx. This website will link to other things like my blog, and my online course as well. Students are responsible to follow all of the directions on the homework assignments. In addition, students will create a blog or a wiki to post their homework in addition to posting to my blog and the class discussions in the online course.

Homework is an extension of the classroom learning process. It is one method to help students establish self-discipline and study skills. Homework also is a way to keep parents informed and involved with schoolwork. Homework will be posted on the class Edmodo (or Black Board Collaborate Page) page (if not physically handed to each student) prior to the assignment. Due dates and times for online assignments are set electronically and assignments are not available after the due date. After the due date, the ‘Late Policy’ will become effective.

Late Policy: Homework

Students will have 3 opportunities to submit late homework assignments. Students who fail to submit their homework assignment(s) on the assigned date will receive a point deduction as follows:

Late Day 1 11 points 89 is the total possible points a student may earn

Late Day 2 9 points 80 is the total possible points a student may earn

Saturday School 5 points 75 is the total possible points a student may earn

Late Policy: Classwork/Projects/Labs/Special Projects (starting on 8/14/17, all late assignments will need a 1 page behavior essay explaining why it is late in order to be accepted.)

Students who fail to submit their assignment(s) on the date delineated by the individual instructor will receive a point deduction as follows:

Late Day 1 11 points 89 is the total possible points a student may earn

Late Day 2 9 points 80 is the total possible points a student may earn

Late Day 3 5 points 75 is the total possible points a student may earn

Reassessment Policy:

The goal of any assessment is to assess the level of mastery on a set of performance standards. Often, students perform on some assessments better than others. Therefore, at the discretion of the teacher or the subject area team, reassessment may be used as a learning opportunity and as a way for the student to demonstrate growth. The teacher or subject area team may allow one (1) reassessment or retest within the same 4.5 week grading period as the original assessment. The reassessment score will be averaged with the initial assessment score.

Make-up Policy:

Students who have excused absences are afforded an opportunity to complete missed work after their return to school. In order to be extended this opportunity, students must provide the teacher with an ‘Excused Absence’ pass. These passes are distributed by the Arabia Mountain High School attendance office. Students have 24 hours for each day of excused absence to complete schoolwork missed. Failure to complete the missed work by the designated deadline will result in a zero.

Students who do not provide an excused absence pass to the teacher upon return to Arabia Mountain High School will be provided with a zero for all work missed and will not be allowed to make-up their work. All unexcused absences will receive a zero for worked missed during the absence.

Projects:

Due to the fact that many of the projects require software, equipment or materials that cannot be sent home, it is imperative that the student keeps up with the instructional expectations each day in this class. Students missing major projects will follow the Make-up Policy guidelines. It is imperative that each student not miss project assignments as most are group-based and each member is an integral part to the success of the entire group.

Classroom Expectations: Please respect yourself, your classmates, your teacher, and school property.

1. Be prompt. Students must be in class before the tardy bell. Tardy students will be marked tardy in Infinite Campus. Accumulations of tardies in the classroom will result in the Arabia Mountain High School discipline policy being executed. Refer to the discipline policy in the school’s handbook for further details.

2. Be prepared. Bring required materials every day. All assignments are due at deadline given. Make restroom stops before and after class.

3. Be alert. Get plenty of rest at home.

4. Respect your classmates and their property.

5. Do not interrupt instruction.

6. You are dismissed from the class once the dismissal bell rings.

7. Discard all gum, food, drinks, etc. prior to entering the computer lab.

8. When using the computers, the student is not to use the computer for activities that do not relate to this class; therefore, you should not be checking e-mail, chatting, playing games, downloading, uploading, doing research for another class, listening to music, personal browsing, etc….When allowed to use the Internet, visiting websites that are not appropriate for school or not educationally related is PROHIBITED. Violators will face consequences as outlined in the student handbook.

Internet Acceptable Use:

Use of the Internet must be in support of education and research and consistent with the educational objectives of the DeKalb County School System. The use of the Internet is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in cancellation of those privileges. Any student user not complying with the DeKalb County School System Internet Acceptable Use Agreement shall lose Internet privileges for a period of not less than one week.

Lab Safety:

· Follow all safety rules given by the teacher.

· Perform processes exactly as instructed by my teacher

· Not help other students, or allow them to help me, if they have not received safety training

· Not operate any tools or equipment unless instructed to do so.

· Use all protective equipment as instructed.

· Carry out good housekeeping practices.

· Know where to get help fast.

· Know the location of first aid and other safety equipment.

· Conduct myself in a responsible manner at all times in a laboratory situation.

Detention:

Detention will be held per the teacher’s designation and preferred time.

Parent(s), you are a vital part of your child’s success; we can’t do it without you. This semester, we would like for you to volunteer of your time. You can volunteer with TSA, during special events/ceremonies, as guest speaker or as an active member of our advisory board. Feel free to e-mail me, so we can decide which volunteer opportunity suits you best.

ALL engineering pathway students are encouraged to join the Technology Student Association (TSA). Dues are $35 and include a spirit day t-shirt. The last day to join TSA for this school year will be September 15, 2017.
