Dr. Rodney F. Swanson, son of Charles and Mary Swanson, is a graduate of Frederick Douglass High School (1985) in Atlanta. He is also a graduate of the University of Georgia (1989) with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Jacksonville State University (2001) with a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, and Mercer University (2015) with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Educational Leadership.
After doing a short stint in corporate America, Dr. Swanson decided to go into the field of education after tutoring at a local church. He has touched the lives of over 5,000 students in a 25-year career. He has worked at Chapel Hill Middle School (1992-1993), Stone Mountain Middle School (1993-2002), DeKalb School of the Arts (2002-2009), Redan High School (2009-2010), and Dunwoody High School (2010-2012). He served as Assistant Principal of Instruction at DeKalb School of the Arts and Redan High, and served as Principal of Dunwoody High School. He is now the proud Principal of Arabia Mountain High School.
He was named Region IV Principal of the Year for the 2015-2016 school year, and Atlanta Urban Debate League Principal of the Year for the 2014-2015 school year. He was named Teacher of the Year in 2002 for Stone Mountain Middle School, and is a graduate of the DeKalb County School’s Leadership Program (2003). He has served on the Target Assistance Team for DeKalb County to help improve the instructional atmosphere at targeted schools.
Dr. Swanson is married and has two sons, who have graduated from the DeKalb County School District and both are in college pursuing their dreams. Dr. Swanson enjoys exercising, reading, sports, family activities, and changing the lives of students.
