Spring Semester EIC11: Energy - Based Service Learning Projects

        1. Video - Powering the Future - Striking a Balance - Please project the video and have the  students complete the assignment. The video and assignment are located in One Drive. The video   is about 43 minutes

        2. Discuss the AMHS EIC11 SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT INTRODUCTION POWERPOINT (located in EIC  folder in One Drive)

        3. Business Energy Survey Project: Show students the "Business Energy Survey Packet" and  rubrics, located in EIC folder in One Drive. This semester's energy service related learning project  consists of visiting a business and completing an "Energy Survey." Basically, the students will  observe different aspects of energy usage at the business location (this will be completed outside  of school hours). Students also have the option of observing a CTAE lab: Mr. Thompson(E101), Mr.  Roberts (A101) or Mrs. Langer (C213). After completing the survey, the group will develop an  ACTION PLAN with strategies for the business to reduce their energy usage. The final product will  consist of the completed Energy Survey Packet and Action Plan which will be presented to the  class.

        4. Each group will make a list of three potential companies to survey and rank them in order of  which you would like to survey and begin writing letters to all three. You can access a sample letter  located in EIC folder in One Drive. These letters should be appropriate for sending to businesses.  It is recommended that, if possible, the businesses selected be ones where either the student or  their parents are familiar with someone who works there. If students are going to observe a CTAE  lab listed above, they must write a letter to the teacher using the template and get consent from the  teacher.

Home Energy Improvement Plan and Smart Energy Goals Due 1/31 100 points

        3. Students break up into groups to discussion questions below (15 minutes)

    • How often is energy in your home wasted? (For example, the computer is on when no one is using it, or the heat is on when no one is home.)
    • How can you reduce your energy use for these energy wasters? Does it seem difficult or easy to make this change?
    • Will everyone in the home help to make this change?
    • What things can’t be changed? (For example, you shouldn’t turn off the refrigerator.)
    • How can you keep track of your energy use so you know where and when to cut your use?
    • Can you buy something now that will save money in the future? (For example, replacing an old air conditioner with a new, Energy Star® rated air conditioner rated air conditioner will save a lot of energy—and money.)
    • Would it be better to try to save energy in just one area or in several different ways?
    • What was the most important thing you found out about your energy use from the survey

        4. Lead a class discussion to help groups find sources of energy waste shared in common.

        5. Groups will work on their AMHS EIC11 Service Learning Planning Form. Located in EIC folder  in One Drive. Due 2/2 100 points
